PSU Faculty of Pharmacy and Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital develop “Andrographis in Cocoa Dried Syrup" to relieve fever in children

Andrographis is an herb that the government has placed on the national drug list and recommended for use in primary health care. The herb is used to alleviate symptoms of cold, cough, and sore throat. The COVID-19 pandemic has generated wide interest in the medical plant, after research has found that Andrographis contains an important substance called andrographolide, with the effect of inhibiting the proliferation of viruses.

Andrographis is described as a medicinal plant, and it is available in bitter-tasting tablet and capsule forms, which are not ideal for children. Therefore, the Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital Foundation under the patronage of HRH Princess Bejaratana Rajasuda, in collaboration with PSU through the Faculty of Pharmacy, have carried out research and developed a special formula for children. The resulting "Andrographis in Cocoa Dried Syrup" is a water-soluble powder with cocoa flavor, with the bitter taste reduced by 80%. One sachet of powder weighs about 10 grams, and contains 10 mg of andrographolide. The total daily dose of andrographolide for children should not exceed 30 milligrams, or three sachets per day, taken after meal.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Phor. Jindaporn Puripattanavong from the PSU Faculty of Pharmacy explained that Andrographis is a native plant that can be found all over Thailand, and it has been in use for a long time. Reducing the bitter taste makes the Thai herb accessible to a larger group of users, including children, and provides alternative choices to modern medicine, benefitting the country.

“Currently, research on the formula of Andrographis extract in dried syrup is still an ongoing process. Its effectiveness continues to be evaluated, and it is being registered as a medicinal formula developed from herbs in accordance with the Herbal Products Act of 2019. The product is probably the first herbal remedy for children, administered by the Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital Foundation” Dr. Phor said.
