PSU’s LGBTQ-supporting policies and new dress code appreciated by students.

Students appreciate that Prince of Songkla University realizes the importance of LGBTQ rights, as evidenced by the PSU announcement supporting gender equality and allowing students to dress according to their gender. Plans for gender-neutral restrooms have also been drafted.

PSU Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Affairs Asst. Prof. Supote Kovitaya revealed that students petitioned the university to remove titles from the student ID card and photos, and allow students to wear uniforms according to their gender identity. As a response, PSU has removed the title on student ID cards and enacted a new dress code.

In a coordinated effort throughout its five campuses, PSU considered a declaration draft under the Gender Equality Act B.E. 2558 (2015), presented at the 5th University Board of Directors meeting on 5 May 2021.  The resulting announcement “Guidelines for student uniform according to gender identity, B.E. 2021” became effective on 29 May 2021.

“The university, as a government agency, must be a model in the provision of equal rights. We must ensure a contributory environment for this group of students to live on campus without pressure and with freedom of expression. All students have equal dignity and humanity.”
Asst. Prof. Supote said.

Students expressed their appreciation for PSU’s acknowledgement of the importance and needs of LGBTQ groups as evidence that society is becoming more open to the rights and freedoms in all forms. Others have lauded the initiative as a good start to achieve equality, and reduce disparities in social discrimination.
