Professor Virasakdi Chongsuvivatwong was presented with the University of Newcastle Graduate Alumni Leadership Award by the Australian-Thai Chamber of Commerce at the 2014 Australian Alumni Gala Dinner in Bangkok (25 July 2014)

Professor Chongsuvivatwong is Professor of Community Medicine at Prince of Songkla University in southern Thailand and an outstanding leader in education, research, service and policy. He is also Curricular Chairman for the International Programme for Graduate Study in Epidemiology and the Director of the Institute of Research and Development for Health of Southern Thailand. His expertise is employed more broadly as Vice-President of Thaksin University Council and a Member of the National Higher Education Commission.

PSU Professor Honored with UoN Graduate Alumni Leadership Award

Professor Chongsuvivatwong's work in the fields of epidemiology, reproductive health, health system research and peace and health development have had a profound impact both locally and internationally. He has been recognised with 16 special awards during his career and received three prestigious and highly acclaimed awards: the National Outstanding Researcher Award (2009) from the National Research Council of Thailand; the National Outstanding Award in Preventative Medicine (Epidemiology) (2010) from Thai Association of Preventative Medicine; and the National Outstanding Disease Control Award (2014) from the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health.

In 2010, Professor Chongsuvivatwong's team was awarded one of two National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) Research Chair Grants for 2010‐2015, with a value of 20 million baht.

As an expert in his field, Professor Chongsuvivatwong has served as a World Health Organisation visiting consultant to various research institutes in Asia on more than 40 occasions, mostly on proposal development and data analysis. Professor Chongsuvivatwong has created numerous educational initiatives and achieved funding for fellowship programs, has led research input to health policy for Thailand, and has created educational and research developments to improve public health in poverty-stricken areas of southern Thailand that are plagued with major health problems and political instability.

Professor Virasakdi Chongsuvivatwong was presented with his award at the 2014 Australian Alumni Gala Dinner in Bangkok.
