PSU, ThaiHealth, and partners opened public beach area "Lae Len Rak Lay" to creatively promote physical activity

E NEW Enews DECEMBER 5 2

       PSU through its Public Policy Institute, in collaboration with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, Plan on Physical Activity, Healthy Space Forum, and Patong Municipality, opened “CityLab Patong Lae Len Rak Lay” at Dolphin Park, Patong Beach, Phuket, as a model of environmentally conscious beachfront public space. The project utilized the concept of "CityLab", an experiment to improve temporary public spaces in a simple, fast, and cost-effective way, through feedback from users in order to develop the city in the long term.

       The project’s consultant, PSU Acting Vice President for Administration and Strategy Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongthep Sutheravut, explained that the development of the Lae Len Rak Lay area is one of the prototype beachfront public space development projects that focus on promoting creative physical activity through play areas, especially for children and youth groups, alongside serving as a recreational area for families. Three areas are incorporated in Lae Len Rak Lay:

  1.  “Lae”, or “look” in the Southern Thai dialect, refers to the exhibition area about physical activities;
  2.  “Len” (“play”) is an invitation to participate in recreational activities through various facilities including the exhibition area that can be converted into a playground after events are over.
  3. Rak Lay” (“save the sea”) refers to the environmentally conscious design that incorporates physical activities, waste management, and decorations made from waste materials.

       “CityLab Patong Lae Len Rak Lay” opened between 16-18 December 2022. Patong residents and tourists were invited to share their thoughts on the development of public spaces and activities, and its aim to transform this public area into a space for family and community interaction, as well as promoting adequate physical activity in the everyday life of residents and visitors.
